Farrel «Pharoah» Sanders (Little Rock, de Arkansas, 13 de octubre de 1940) es un músico estadounidense de jazz, saxofonista tenor y soprano; también toca ocasionalmente el alto. Se destacó por su mezcla de estilo de free jazz y marcadas líneas rítmicas, a menudo con percusiones africanas.
Estudió piano en la adolescencia, con su abuelo; luego batería y clarinete, y a los dieciséis años, saxo y flauta.
Sus comienzos fueron en algunas bandas locales de R&B, como las de Bobby Blue y Junior Parker. En 1959 se trasladó a Oakland, en California, para estudiar en la Oakland Junior College, donde logró tocar con apenas 19 años, con Sonny Simmons, Dewey Redman y Ed Kelly, con quienes forma el grupo "Little Rock", y con Philly Joe Jones.
En 1961 se trasladó a Nueva York, destacando rápidamente entre los músicos de vanguardia de la Gran Manzana, adscritos en aquella época al freejazz, entre ellos Don Cherry, Sun Ra. En 1963 formó grupo con el pianista John Hicks, el bajista Wilburt Ware y el batería Billy Higgings.
A partir de 1962, colaboró en la banda de John Coltrane, quien lo descubre en un concierto en el Village Gate y le invita a unirse a su banda y con quien colaboraría a menudo en los últimos discos que Coltrane hizo para el sello Impulse!.
Después de la muerte de Coltrane colaboró con su viuda, Alice Coltrane,1 mientras siguió grabando como solista bajo el sello ESP y participó además en un par de álbumes de Sun Ra y otro con Don Cherry.
Su mayor éxito fue el disco Karma de 1969 con Leon Thomas como vocalista.
En 1987 grabó Africa con homenaje la música de Coltrane.
